THE ANGER OF THE FURIES

6

Hearing this piece of news the little girl was silenced for minutes, so the adults couldn't guess what she was thinking of. Nevertheless how should she react.

''So I have to collect my things just because a higher god who I related to wants it?”

''No. Where the missy shoves off, there is no need for worldly things. Milo may go a bit of the way with you, but then you have to leave him behind you, too. Like everybody else.''

Theano wasn't sure if she felt well, but a vain thought buzzed at the bottom of her soul, now the men alluded to Flecky. She could never say goodbye to her very best friend! Ever!

''Write a letter to him!” said one of the men, as if he really would have seen into Theano's thoughts.

''How long will I be far from Samos?” she asked.

It seemed she started to resign herself to her fate.

''Only Poseidon can answer this question.” one of the foreigners gave her this elusive reply.

Theano thought over her situation briefly for several moments. She couldn't go away without parting words, but she had to do all of this that the agreement between Milo and a higher god should stay still be a secret. So she mustn't tell Flecky, why, only that probably this will be the last time they ever see each other.

No, she can not do this!

She didn't feel herself strong enough to do it personally. But the letter had regarded as something too coward and simple, considering the given circumstances, solving by her.

One of the men conjured a pigeon out of the blue. It had glare blue eyes, with the symbol of Poseidon on its thorax. Later in time Theano will meet this emblem, as the foreigners told her.

''She is Shila, the fasters homing-pigeon in the world. She will give your letter to your friend.”

Theano bewitchedly was astounded at the dainty bird then, when she went over to the little girl's hand, she withdrew to her room to write a letter, this time. To Pythagoras.

''And if she escapes again?” worried Milo, almost just whispered the words.

''That will never happened again. Although she doesn't know, but Shila is not just the fasters, but the most intelligent speciment of her kind. If in the missy's mind this escape ever existed, Shila would mark it to us immediately. And, despite the missy is the only child of the higher god Poseidon, her supernatural abilities are not a quarter so well developed.”

Why does nobody care what I want?

The thought was thrumpling in her head, when between two thunders she heard Flecky's voice, as he called her. First she believed she was dreaming for a split second she was unheedful of the latest hours' events. She looked at Milo to know if he also heard the little boy's voice, but the man's face didn't startle.

When she heard the voice again she knew it was real. This time the voice was cleaner. She couldn't delude herself that just her imagination played a stronge joke on her.

''Do stop the carriage!” she banged the top of the coach.

''What's the matter?” the adults looked at her, then finally Milo also heard Pythagoras' voice. He tried to keep her back the last time but the little girl lightly put his mind at rest.

''I made a promise and I keep it. I'll go to Poseidon. But nobody can forbid me to meet Flecky! Maybe it's the last occasion!”

''Remember, missy: you must not tell him where you are going and why!”

This made the parting slightly more difficult to that 'missy' who so far was completely honest with her best and only friend.

In spite of this she nodded her head hearing the man's words to announce if she won't acknowledge, but she understood and observed her part of the contract.

And she kept this secret until now, that cold, desert night when she told Pythagoras everything. Everything that she couldn't tell him once. Not just because of the vow. The fear, Flecky sees her and thinks she was coward and weak, withheld her to tell honestly the whole truth because she didn't fight for her own desires. Now this fear lived anew.

The 'triangle guy' heard her account mostly with motionless face. While Theano was telling him the story she understood why it was so hard for Milo at that time to tell her the hardest sentence of the truth: Theano was the only child of a higher god, Poseidon. And as such she had duties and any affection for a mortal human couldn't get in her life, either. However she felt, if she had known her real descent since the first second of her life, she couldn't have resisted this, now, man of profound.

It was hard but she stifled that desire to caress that once-freckled face, which he got his nickname from. She couldn't know what is he thinking now of but she had the feeling soon this uncertainty will be getting on her nerves.

Footsteps broke the tense silence between them. It was Arcas.

''Brother, can we talk?” he had a long fance penitently. He darelooked hardly into Pythagoras' eyes after was happened.

''I am sorry, Flecky!” Theano mumbled as soft as only Pythagoras could hear. Arcas didn't understand what has gotten into the childhood-cronies, he only could hope they will remove the possible divergence between them very soon. Although he had never said to anybody he always wanted an honest and true friend, like Theano was to his brother.

The 'triangle guy' was just staring before himself and hardly visibly nodded. Because Theano had left the brothers alone after the apology, Arcas thought the nodding was the answer his question.

Poseidon's daughter, after she had left them alone, stopped short halfway between them and Jason. She was trembling all over because of the last minutes, the confession. Because of what has Flecky thinking of her in these minutes and only the last what kind of punishment will she get for this.

One bogey followed the other in her mind's eye, but none of them was as dreadful as the thought: Flecky will never look at her like before. Maybe she detered him for herself for good.

Jason appeared of nowhere to parry her falling just like Milo did in olden times. He knew he vainly tried to hush her, Theano would cried just more desperately, so he didn't say any words. He hugged her to solace, and let her to have her cry out on his shoulder.

''I did not mean to hurt him! I did never mean to hurt him!” she sobbed so close to Jason's ears that the young man had almost the feeling to hear her words in his mind. After this Theano wrenched herself from Jason's arms and she distractedly looked him up. Her mouth was working, nevertheless she didn't begin to speak. Then she pressed her lips together and because of it they became almost white; however Jason heard her voice. In his mind…

''What kind of punishment?” he refered back uncomprehendingly. He still digested the events of the last minutes.

Can you hear what I'm thinking? How is it possible?

Theano lost her train of thought. She gawked, looked at Jason then she avoided his glance.

''I have no idea.” the man shaked with eyes opened wide. ''About this… punishment… as you put it… can I help you somehow?”

Unfortunately you can't. Nobody can. This is Poseidon's punishment, because… I've broken my word. He is the only one who is able to give an absolution to me.

Jason breathed a sigh. He joined his hands over each other in front of his chest and he started to think.

''Then we have to encourage him to change his mind! I'm sure Pythagoras knows the solution we need. He certainly would not let this thing...” but now Theano's voice reverberated in his head and also in his ears more strongly than before:

No! He can not help me.

''What do I know the solution for?” refered back from Jason the mentioned who appeared on the scene with his brother next to him. Both of them found it was strange that Jason gripped his own head in a vice with his hands, as if raging headache bullied him. And Theano didn't say anything.

''For what we would do in order to...” the man hesitated. He stealthily looked at Theano.

''...to?” Pythagoras pressed him.

''...to...make Poseidon changes his mind.”

'In what respect?' Arcas would have asked but he rather wasn't a part of this conversion. He was looking at his brother, who frankly gazed at Theano.

''Can we talk in private?” he put his question so feelinglessly that the blood in Theano's veins turned cold.

''Arcas, would you look after Hercules?” Jason looked at the boy because he knew this talking in private would be one-sided without him enough. The boy resented it a little bit, but with a sigh he went to fulfil his wish.

''I said in private, Jason. I appreciate you want to help, but this concerns only the two of us.”

He showed with a wee gesture first on Theano then on himself.

''Now this is not so easy, Pythagoras.” Jason said softly. In the next moment the 'triangle guy' heard only that Jason said to Theano just like he would replied to her: ''I know, and believe it I understand you. But he had the right to know what's happening here. And because it seems I'm the one who can hear you...”

''Wait!” Flecky raised his hand then he turned to Theano. His physiognomy were eased. Now the punishment, which she was telling him with her secret not long ago, hampered their dialogue. Whether Poseidon knew this? Did he know about Jason, too? Without a doubt he counted on him not the least. And so they could take Theano's father in. ''I've already known, what's happening here.” he caressed so gently all along lock of her brown hair that Jason understood a matter: between Theano and Flecky didn't need an interpreter this time. ''I am sorry!” his voice quivered as he embraced her and felt, how Theano's heart leaped. This time because of the relief. Yes, she had stolen her voice but Flecky stayed with her. And this meant her more than anything. All else will be solved by them. Together.

If Theano didn't say a word, instead of her Hercules did the futher part of the journey. He eagerly counted the money in his thought. But they knew in Helios they had to give up these dreams. During the way Philomen got so close to Baucis to renounce the throne for her. And while the two of them were drafting the plan of their future together far from Atlantis, Jason, Hercules, Theano and Pythagoras started their journey back home with some coffers full of money…
