THE ANGER OF THE FURIES

1

The three good friends found themselves a new job. Now, that Theano spent most of her time in the palace, as Princess Ariadne’s new parlour maid, Pythagoras didn’t want to drop behind her, either. Hercules and Jason sometimes had the feeling unspeakable competitive spirit predominated  the childhood-friends, but until they had a windfall, none of them had a reason to complain.

At least in most of time they hadn’t...

But to drag along half of the city a coffer with full of money in the middle of the night... none of them wasn’t ready for this.

In any case Jason and Pythagoras were overcoming their bad feelings, while Hercules was ambling along in front of them. In an unguarded moment the ’triangle guy’ dropped his part of the coffer from his hands so it landed with a big clap in the silence of the night.

’’What are you doing?” whispered Herules in his outcry.

’’More than you.” responded Pythagoras.

’’If you gave us a hand...” Jason backed up his friend.

’’We are being followed.” Hercules reckoned. He had a gift for nosing these things out.

’’It's a goat!” made Jason a gesture of resignation when they heard the bleating of the ’culprit’.

Shortly, however, a shadow attracted the attention of the other two. It prowled arond them for moments. The person in question was disarmed by Jason with his smart and quick method. He wanted to knock the unknown down, when a street lamp lit the face of the person and Pythagoras recognized in him his own brother, he hadn't seen for a long time.

In the remaining part of the night, while Pythagoras and Jason were preparing themselves for the next day setting out conscientiously, Hercules had a passion for the gambling. He enjoyed especially that he found his equal in Arcas.

’’Three!” the younger one said enthusiastically.

’’Luck!” said Hercules quickly.

’’Skill. Arcas shifted.

’’Can you give us a hand?” Pythagoras was more strained. His younger brother’s unexpected appearance, their journey across the desert to Helios... these were too much to him. Besides Theano is late...

’’Four!” shouted Hercules in his joy, and then he started to dance. ’’Four, four - knock on the door! I'm the one the girls adore!” he sang.

’’Whew, what’s this big merriment?” popped Theano, who Jason opened the door to. In the discord the other didn’t hear her knocking. Pythagoras was just adjusting his striped blanket when he heard her voice and he ran before her.

’’Do you remember my brother?” he asked her more awkwardly than enthusiastically.

’’Arcas? Oh, dear gods, you haven't changed anything!” bantered she.

’’I’m sorry to hear that.” the boy pretended to be offended. ’’But I’m glad you found each other again! The old band is together again, isn’t it? And the hatchet is buried and everything?”

Theano and Pythagoras looked at each other.

’’Hercules, we have to be on our way by dawn.” the ’triangle guy’ changed the subject rather.

’’Where?” It seemed his brother’s tone struck Arcas or just he didn’t care about this. Theano watched on the scene.

’’It's work.” answered shortly Pythagoras. ’’We have to go. I'm sorry. We need the money.”

’’I can come with you.” remarked Arcas with ease.

Theano scanned Flecky’s face: his usually pale skin became a shade whiter hearing his brother’s words.

’’No.” he made his point of view resolutely.

’’Why not?”

’’It's too dangerous.” however there was something else in the air. But what it was exactly, even Theano couldn’t say. But she knew her best friend too long and too well to be certain by now: there was something even she doesn't known. And on this thought inexplicable sadness moved in her soul for a moment, then it struck her own secret. So we are even now, Flecky, she thought to herself.

’’He seems to know how to swing a sword much better than you.” Hercules expressed his opinion about the subject.

’’Where are you going?”

’’To Helios.” Hercules took precedence over his friend with his answer and in the latest part of the night it seemed he was at the head of the little group.

’’Then I'm your man!” Arcas offered so full of confidence that he would have convinced even Theano at a moment, if the girl hadn’t seen Pythagoras’ reaction during this time.

’’Excellent. That's decided then, he's coming with us.”, as this was only to be expected: Hercules made his decision and that’s that.

In the latest part of the night Jason has already joined their dice game, too, while a sad, desperate blue pair of eyes was looking at the three merry players.

’’He will be alright.” Theano took Pythagoras’ sometimes trembling hand. ’’We all will care each other and everything’s going to be alright.”

The ’triangle guy’ suspected his brother found his tongue soon after the lot of wine he drank with Hercules during the dice game, so he tried to shield Theano from Arcas without sensation. It was needless for Theano to hear that time when every turn he was searching for her anywhere he went in the world.

’’It’s my job to protect him.” Pythagoras mumbled more for himself than for her.

Theano took a seat on the bed, she ran her forefinger over some stripe of the blanket several times, and she looked at her friend only rarely. ’’I’m sorry.” sighed Pythagoras then he closed the door of the chamber, he also sat down on the bed in front of the girl. ’’While we arrived home, Arcas and Hercules were just drinking and gambling. He is not a bad person, he is just...”

’’It’s not necessary to demur, Flecky.” a smile flickered across Pythagoras’ face. Theano cought sight of the coffer next to the door of the chamber. ’’So this is the cargo which just can’t wait to travel across the desert?” They dazedly burst into a laugh.

’’You can change your mind.”

’’And should I miss the hot men of Helios? No way!” laughed Theano. ’’It’s not necessary for you to protect me, Flecky. I’m older than you, or have you already forgotten it?” she straightened up rascally.

’’Less than three months.” Pythagoras was struck dumb. ’’As you always remind me of it.”
