THE ANGER OF THE FURIES

2

’’I have come to seek the wisdom of Poseidon.” Pythagoras came to a sudden stop on the imaginary doorstep of the Oracle’s door. One of his parts thought it was a bad idea to know beforehand the formation of the future.

’’I have not seen you here before.”

The Oracle is wise and she is never wrong, the ’triangle guy’ was telling to himself because he wanted to convince and calm himself.

’’No.” he whispered.

’’You have a question for me?” Yes and also no, thought Pythagoras to himself. He felt he was a foolish little child at the primary school before an important repetation. Why haven’t you prepared, my boy?” he almost heard of his former teachers’ words, which evaded him till now. He has already been conscientious and diligent. But now, no matter how much he tried he could not persuade himself of his past stayed in the past forever. Actually he waited for a kind of confirmation from the Oracle.

’’I am to travel to Helios.” he uttered finally.

’’You wish to pray for protection?” Pythagoras saw the Oracle as a patient teacher.

’’Yes. No. I...” he drew a deep breath. ’’I wish to know if we will cross the desert safely.” Although he saw the movements of the wise woman, his mind was honed on her words.

’’Your journey will take you far beyond Helios.” The Oracle’s voice echod almost ominously peacefully. ’’For you are about to embark on a voyage of the soul.”

’’What does that mean?” Pythagoras had a premonition.

’’That you have good reason to be concerned.”

’’I don't understand.” or he just didn’t want to understand.

’’The question you posed was not plain, so neither is the answer.”

’’Then tell me.” the young man had the feeling that the nervousness and fear, which gnawed at his heart, immediately sapped his mind. ’’What will befall us?”

’’You, and you alone will determine that.”

’’I should not go.” he mumbled to himself now that his suspicion might be proved.

’’Whatever you decide, the time of reckoning is upon you. Try as you may, you will not avert it.”

’’I am grateful.” he felt he got the answer. He started to go with slow, deliberate and trembling steps in front of ’the time of reckoning’.

’’I sense a darkness in your heart. Do you want to share it?”

He came to a sudden standstill and slowly turned round. His eyes burnt because of the tears. It’s impossible it is the end! Theano and he have just found each other, his life, it seemed, got back to normal...

’’No.” he answered in a subdued voice but clearly. ’’It is my burden to live with...” The stubborn tears covered his eyes and flowed throughout his face tickled. ’’..and mine to die with.”

’’As you wish.”

There wasn’t any senstiments in the look of the Oracle. Pythagoras would nosed about her for a few moments just to read a kind of hope in her. However his heart and also his mind knew, it was a vain hope. He will meet the Gods, soon. But until then he kept secret from everybody he whenever he went about everything the Oracle said to him. He did not want to embitter his friends even more.

The wise woman’s face stayed inscrutable until Pythagoras’ heavy steps hadn’t swallowed up by the the people getting prepared for an early pray in the temple of Poseidon.

’’My heart breaks for him.” Theano stepped forward from the covering of one of the bulky columns.

She heard every word perfectly and although she didn't come to eavesdrop, somewhere at the bottom of her heart she didn’t regret to know Pythagoras’ fear now. Even if she didn’t know every part of it...

’’Whatever has happend, as I also told him, the time of reckoning is upon him.” she knew exactly the Oracle knew more than she spoke about.

’’Because I am here?” she asked after a short pause. „Tell me honestly: did all of you form an alliance against me? Against us?”

’’I can not say to you more than to your friend.” the wise woman stated.

’’I will ruin your plans! I will protect him or die trying!” Theano felt how her despair became anger and before the Oracle reacted anything, she rushed out of a temple.

The little group began their journey with the company of the lucky fiancé Philémon, the one-time slave Otus, and a mysterious lady. Nilas was their guide. Their way led across the desert to Helios where Philémon’s future wife was waiting for them.

’’You should be careful how you judge people.” Pythagoras observed to his brother as a constructive criticism when they took a rest the first time.

Before their beginning Arcas attacked Otus because there was the mark of murderers on the high, strong man. After the incident Nilas insructed his group in a fit of temper with these words: ’When we're in the desert, if you want to stay alive, you do as I say. That goes for all of you. In the desert, we are all brothers.’ During the journey he told Pythagoras about Otus, too. The ’triangle guy’ conveyed these informations to his brother. Arcas was always hotheaded and stubborn or he was just too young; after all the painful wounds remained in his soul: their father was killed.

When they were closer to Helios than Atlantis, they found a temporary refuge from the Furies because they were attacked by a gang of thieves. Jason, foresaw calculated with the embarrassing consequences, asked at night by the camp-fire:

’’These Furies, are they gods?”

Theano suppressed a smile. Pythagoras shared all his knowledge about the Furies with them:

’’Once summoned, they know no mercy. For the murderer, there is no hiding place. They will pursue him to the ends of the earth, driven by the anger and hurt of those that have been wronged. They sense only what is in the heart of the man that invoked them. He alone can recall them. For without his true forgiveness there is no escape.”hearing him Theano felt goosebumps on her arms.

She tightened the blanket on her. This desert was incredible! The heat during the day was as unbearable as the cold at night.

end of the part two...
