TOGETHER AGAIN

2

Dear Flecky, my very kind friend,

The Gods didn’t give me enough strength to be able to say goodbye to You personally. I have to leave Samos but there is something more horrible: I have to part company with my very very best friend... – You, Flecky.

I pray to the Gods incessantly for a day when You forgive my suddenly leaving; and You will have a life that is as happy as I was as Your confidant friend!

May the Gods be with You!

Theano

When Pythagoras read these lines, the ragely storm could not hinder him from his purpose. The endless rainwater converged with the tears of despair and obtuseness, dimmed his sight. He saw an unusual spectacle in front of Theano’s father’s house: a carriage. It was more splendid than anything he had ever seen. And it was just leaving. Although he couldn’t see any proof he was certain it came because of the girl. And it took her away from Samos and away from him. Away from every adventure, which they had together. And if he didn’t do anything, he will lose her forever.

’’Theano!” he bawled after the carriage with a booming voice. He did his best but his childly voice was drown out by the fumely storm.

He started off at a run. He ran and bawled the name of Theano, and as far as somewhere in the border of the village, the horses stopped short.

Pythagoras smoothed out pouring rain and his tears from his eyes to be sure it was not just his fancy.

It was not...

Milo’s lovely daughter left the carriage behind and ran into his arms. They hugged each other for moments. They didn’t care the storm or those who were waiting for the girl more and more impatiently.

In the end Theano sobbed but extricated herself from Pythagoras’ embrace.

’’I have to go. They are already waiting for me.” she looked back to the carriage for a split second. She had to restrain herself, she knew exactly she had to leave Samos.

And Pythagoras...

’’But why?” the little boy tried to understand what’s happening, but everything, he thought, confused him even more. ’’I don’t understand this, and it’s new for me. And it’s bad. Very bad.”

He wanted to hug her again but this time Theano didn’t let him.

’’I’m sorry.” she sobbed then backed away towards the carriage.

’’Will we meet again?” an other desperate question that put thousand knives into the girl’s heart.

She didn’t want to lie, on the other hand she knew exactly that the plain truth would just frighten Pythagoras. After all she did not understand exactly either what’s happening to her.

’’I don’t know, Flecky.” she answered finally.

’’Then go! I don’t want to see you again!” the little boy’s face became callous and he wiped the last tears from his eyes. He also started to withdraw and although he knew, his own heart will be broken as well, but as the last words he has hailed the girl before he ran back to the village:

’’You are not my friend anymore!”

The despair restrained her more than before, just like all of Pythagoras’ tears and pain passed to her soul. Milo parried her falling in time, before she collapsed into the mud because of her feebleness.

’’Forgive me, Flecky! Please, forgive me!”

And after that day she went off to sleep with these words every night...
